Press Release: Writers’ Pens Fight Domestic Violence and Abuse

Writers compete to curb Domestic Violence and Abuse

Excel for Charity, an international writing competitions series run by Eastern Light EPM International, London, is currently running poetry and short story competitions in aid of The TRYangle Project; a Greenwich-based charity, with an aim to increase the safety of families who experience domestic violence and abuse by providing programmes of group work and individual counselling for men and women in London and South-East England, and young people aged 13-18 years who are impacted by domestic violence.

Domestic Violence is a major problem affecting the lives of millions of women, men and children all over the world resulting in serious injury, emotional scars, depression and death. Many cases of domestic violence are never reported. In the United Kingdom two women die every week as a direct result of domestic violence. That is 104 women a year. Many of these women die leaving young children behind who grow up with the emotional and mental scars.

By organising these two competitions, Excel for Charity will donate one third of the net entry fees to The TRYangle Project. A good participation level will mean more funds going to the charity to help them do their work. Excel for Charity also supports other charities including Lupus UK, Stepping Stones Nigeria, Diversity House, Build Africa, and The Psychiatry Research Trust. So far, Excel for Charity has raised and given £1187.14 to charity through these competitions. The exciting thing about the Excel for Charity Competitions is that every writer who enters stands a chance of winning the literary honour and a cash prize whilst helping raise the much needed funds for charities.

The TRYangle Project competitions are for previously unpublished poems and short stories in English Language on the theme of ‘Domestic Violence’ up to 40 lines long for poems and 1,500 words long for short stories. The poems and short stories must not have been posted to a publicly accessible website, or blog, and must not be under consideration for publication, or accepted for publication elsewhere. writers may explore the theme in any way they wish including, but not limited to any of these suggestions: ‘Perhaps you have been affected by domestic violence or abuse as the victim, as a friend or relative of the victim, as a caregiver to a victim of domestic violence, as a friend or relative of the perpetrator, or simply as a social observer affected by media reports of domestic violence, as poetic or fictional renderings of personal experiences, as witnesses of other people’s experiences.’
